Investment Strategy

Whilst the Cloverleaf Group will look at opportunities at any stage of a company’s life, we primarily focus on incubating early-stage business plans and companies, as well as investing in later-stage venture opportunities or companies that require development or growth capital.

Cloverleaf seeks to invest in companies where it believes it can leverage the team’s experience, knowledge, capital and industry relationships in order to build a differentiated and valuable business.

We seek to invest in businesses with significant growth potential, often utilising breakthrough technology. Of fundamental importance is a compelling customer value proposition combined with an underserved market. Equally important, we invest in talented, trustworthy and entrepreneurial management teams capable of developing and nurturing companies through the likely “growing pains” associated with any early stage and high growth business.

Unlike venture capital funds that are structured as finite term investment funds, the Cloverleaf Group (structured as a perpetual holding company) is not limited by a defined investment horizon for making or exiting its investments. Cloverleaf can make and then hold its investments for as long (or as short) as makes sense for both the company and the Cloverleaf Group.

Given the human and financial resources we commit to each of our portfolio companies, Cloverleaf prefers to make investments where it can obtain either a majority or significant minority stake with investor protections commensurate with the level of investment and risk being assumed. We have no pre-defined limits around the size or concentration of our investments but we usually lead investment financing rounds in the range of US$2 to $10 million.

In addition to the provision of financial capital, we seek to provide frank and considered advice, to become a trusted adviser and to build close and long lasting relationships with our management teams and other key stakeholders in our portfolio companies.

We usually seek to become a member of the portfolio company’s board of directors and believe that directors should be available as required to support their companies, not just for attendance at periodic board meetings. We pay particular emphasis to providing support and guidance to our companies during times of strategic or tactical importance, such as during international expansion, negotiation of strategic alliances or acquisitions and during equity or debt capital raisings.
